Initial purpose of the trip was my attendance at a conference in Freiburg, Germany. It seemed to make sense to take advantage of being in Freiburg to hike in the Black Forest. Jacob (15) and I had already done that on the Appalachian Trail. So our intent is to hike from Freiburg, up to where we lived in 1987-88, in Freiolsheim, near Karlsruhe. Afterwards, Jacob will be attending a 3-week German course in Graz and I will be attending an Austrian culture seminar in Vienna/Graz. Meanwhile, Molly (13) will be staying with Lucia, the daughter of a friend, in France.
